LATEST:

END of the EXTRA

At last it's official - Tesco have given up their plans for a massive Tesco Extra in Milngavie, at least for the moment. This is the end of a four year saga!

Many thanks and congratulations to everyone - if it had not been for your financial and moral support at the time of the original application and then at the appeal, the EXTRA store would have been built by now.

We welcome the refurbishment of the existing store planned for this summer and would be keen to work with Tesco for the mutual benefit of store and community.

A NEW BEGINNING

A new action group - MAKING THE MOST OF MILNGAVIE - is emerging. It held a highly successful public meeting on Monday, 17 June. This marks a beginning for Milngavie to take a bigger hand in its own future.

If you were unable to attend this meeting, you are invited to contribute your thoughts on this form. »

We Like Milngavie (WLM) was formed in 2010 to co-ordinate the widespread opposition in the local community to Tesco replacing their supermarket in Milngavie (chiefly a foodstore) with a vast Tesco Extra.

We Like Milngavie is not opposed to Tesco as such, nor to their upgrading and modestly expanding their existing store. However, their proposed new store, which was subsequently refused planning permission by East Dunbartonshire Council, and the refusal upheld on appeal, would have been disastrous for the town.
