Tesco have not listened

In June 2012, Tesco exhibited their proposals for a further application. Although these showed cosmetic improvements to the appearance of the store, all the major concerns of residents - resulting from the vast floorspace and the relocation - remained unchanged.

The new proposal:

  • is still FAR TOO BIG -The boasted reduction in footprint is an insignificant 2% of total. The minor height reduction is only around the edges.
  • still has the SAME SALES FLOORSPACE - so effect on our traders will be the same.
  • remains in the WRONG PLACE - the huge store still fills the central Allander valley, blocking views across it in all directions.
  • still TURNS ITS BACK on the town centre, with the only entrance facing Lennox Park and the long back wall on Woodburn Way.
  • has a vast, open-topped DECKED CAR PARK, with lighting columns above, right next to Lennox Park. Pollution by light, fumes, noise and litter.
  • does not allow MY BUS (used by elderly and disabled people) to stop near the store entrance.
  • removes nearly all the TREES from the site.
  • has a high blank wall right next to the ALLANDER WAY at the FISH LADDER, making this unique area feel unsafe and prone to vandalism.
  • still overwhelms GAVIN'S MILL with its huge scale.
  • still puts THE RIVER IN A CANYON between the store and decked car park.
